I personally love emotionally focused therapy (EFT). EFT is rooted in attachment theory, which holds that people need social connection and that we learned the emotional wounds we carry in life from significant past relationships. EFT helps clients develop a deeper understanding and awareness of their emotions by guiding them to recognize, experience, and express their emotions instead of suppressing or intensifying them. Through emotional awareness, clients start to identify relational patterns and thoughts. They can start to use their emotions as a compass to navigate life experiences and decisions.
EFT requires a strong trusting connection between the therapist and client. One of the techniques of EFT is to explore and confront key emotional moments and reframe the experience and beliefs to foster a new, healthier perspective that helps the client change the way they engage with themselves and others.
